The history of the city of La Rochelle
Located on the Atlantic coast in the north-west of the Charente Maritime department, in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region in the former province of Aunis, La Rochelle, formerly known as the fishing village, became one of the leading ports in the 12th century.
In the 1100s, La Rochelle enjoyed considerable freedom and was free from feudal rule. The 13th century marked an important development for the city of La Rochelle thanks to the wine and salt trade with merchants from several ports and cities in Europe. La Rochelle was one of the most important French trading posts on the Atlantic coast until the 15th century. In the 19th century, La Rochelle underwent a revival, thanks in particular to the construction of the deep-water port of La Pallice. This led to a dynamic increase in maritime trade.
Since then, La Rochelle has not suffered any significant damage during the Second World War and has experienced strong population growth in the 1950s, which continues to this day. With a population of around 80,000, La Rochelle is a port city with beautiful scenery, which is why many people visit during the holidays to enjoy its maritime landscapes and beautiful historic monuments.
Specialities of La Rochelle
Over the years, La Rochelle has developed a speciality local drink that has left its mark on generations of La Rochelle residents. Authentique Guignette is an original, lightly carbonated aperitif that combines white wine and fruit infusions. Created 100 years ago by Edmiliano Garcia, this drink remains one of La Rochelle’s oldest specialities. Since 1933, the company has specialised in supplying wines and spirits.
The neighbouring islands also give La Rochelle some wonderful culinary assets. Oysters from Île de Ré or Île d’Oléron are absolutely delicious to enjoy with a view of the ocean, of course! They are matured in clay tanks. Not very meaty, but balanced and very salty, they are absolutely delicious! Other seafood is also very popular in local restaurants. If you’re strolling through the streets of La Rochelle, stop and try some clams, cockles or delicious prawns.
