Definition of tree climbing
But what is the definition of a tree climbing? A tree climbing (accrobranche in french) corresponds to a set of routes positioned high up in a forest and thus allowing you to move from tree to tree. These courses can be positioned at different heights ; generally, the highest courses are considered the most difficult and vice versa. The tree climbing courses are made up of different workshops that have to be crossed, each workshop requiring skill, vigilance and sometimes physical strength, depending on the difficulty to which each course belongs. Thus the association between the height and the nature of the workshops gives the course its position in the hierarchy of difficulties. This activity is considered to be a leisure activity that is both playful and somewhat sporty. In a more academic context, this activity is often referred to as the Acrobatic Course at Height. You can easily find additional information on the description of tree climbing courses on the web.
The history of the Fontdouce tree climbing
A first modestly sized tree climbing park
L‘accrobranche in Fontdouce was opened in April 2013 on a plot of land next to the Abbey of Fontdouce, a tourist site classified as a Historic Monument belonging to the family of the founder of the Parc Aventure de Fontdouce. Initially made up of 5 courses, 1 children’s course and 4 adult courses including green, blue, red and black, as well as a giant zip line and a children’s zip line, the tree climbing park has gradually expanded.
A tree climbing activity that is expanding and diversifying
The following year, the yellow course was created, and later the purple and pink courses were added, in 2018 the orange and burgundy courses and then in 2022 the turquoise course. In parallel, a second giant zip line was installed in 2015. At the same time, other outdoor leisure activities were gradually offered to the general public: thus in 2015, it was first of all the outdoor laser game on land located in the undergrowth at the end of the valley of Fontdouce. Then in 2020, bubble foot, archery game, water fight and interactive rallies on digital tablets were implemented. Then in 2022, the rental of electric all-terrain scooters was launched to allow the discovery of the surroundings of the site as well as the Fonth Lanta activity, a variation of the Koh Lanta show, offered mainly to groups in a logic of team- building.
Why a tree climbing in Fontdouce ?
A site with a long history !
F‘irst of all, the Fontdouce site was originally an abbey founded in 1111 by Benedictine monks ; they certainly did not have the idea of creating a tree climbing there ! They were rather looking for tranquility and isolation, settling in this magnificent valley away from society and its tumult ! During the French Revolution, the monks were driven out and the State appropriated the site to resell it to the family of the current owners who bought both the buildings and the surroundings land to create a farm there.
From agriculture to tourism, a long shift begins !
At that time, we were still far from tree climbing, but we were getting closer to it : during a change of generation at the end of the 1960s, the site was gradually restored and opened up to tourist activity, especially for cultural visits. Thus, Fontdouce gradually moved from agriculture to tourism, also with the organization of jazz and classical music concerts from the 1990s. Restorations continued and from the 2010s, spaces opened up for rental, for weddings and seminars.
The tree climbing to reinforce the tourist activity of Fontdouce !
It was precisely at that time, in 2012 exactly, that one of the owners’ sons had the idea of strengthening the tourist activity of Fontdouce by opening it up to a wider public thanks to a playful offer. and sports such as tree climbing. Indeed, the configuration of the site with its valley, its century-old oaks, its wide open spaces offer ideal conditions for developing outdoor leisure activities such as tree climbing. This is how, just next to the Abbey of Fontdouce, in an area abandoned to brambles and brushwood since the storm of 1999, the construction of a new tourist offer was launched at the end of 2012 : then gradually appeared small an adventure park, initially dedicated to tree climbing and which has gradually opened up to other fun and sporting activities.
